It was so easy, but one wrong decision would change this five-year-old boy’s life forever. You’d never imagine that a train journey could have such incredible and long-lasting consequences, yet the moment Saroo Brierley stepped into that carriage his fate for the next quarter of a century was sealed. After this period, however, something truly extraordinary happened.
Saroo was a pretty normal, if very poor, five-year-old kid. Born in Khandwa, a town in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, you’d be forgiven for thinking that his life wouldn’t be one to make the headlines. But you’d be very wrong.
One evening in 1986 Saroo and his brother Guddu were begging at Khandwa Junction station. Their mom, who worked in the building trade, didn’t earn enough money to feed her two boys.
