Rebecca Lolosoli remembers a troubled past. Her home life in Samburu District, Kenya, was fraught with danger – simply going out to collect firewood could be the start of a horrific ordeal.
According to Rebecca, some British soldiers training in the area would wait in hiding to attack and rape the local women. If their husbands found out, they would throw the women and their children out of their homes. Many of the women ended up being jailed, leaving nobody to look after their children.
When Rebecca tried to speak out in support of the victims of rape, she was beaten by the men of her village. And after she finally left hospital, her husband mentioned nothing about what they had done.
