John Krasinski and Emily Blunt are perhaps one of Hollywood’s cutest couples. And when the pair watched a screening of the 2018 film Mary Poppins Returns together, Krasinski had the most adorable reaction to seeing his wife in the iconic title role.

Krasinski had begun to act way before he ever met Blunt, however. The future star had first trod the boards as a sixth grader in his school’s staging of Annie; there, he had portrayed Daddy Warbucks. And Krasinski continued to perform when at Newton South High School in Massachusetts.

In fact, Krasinski’s senior year saw him co-starring in a show penned by his classmate B.J. Novak. Interestingly enough, the pair would once again work with each other when Krasinski got his big break in NBC sitcom The Office.

But first, Krasinski graduated from high school and went on to study theater arts at Brown University. Then, after graduating in 2001, he moved to New York City. And while in the Big Apple, Krasinski began to pursue a career in acting by appearing in everything from commercials and theater to television.

Finally, in 2004 Krasinski earned what would become his breakthrough role after he was cast in the U.S. remake of The Office. In the series, the actor played paper salesman Jim Halpert; he also worked as an occasional director of the show.

And The Office went on to win four Primetime Emmy Awards during its run as well as being a huge hit with audiences. In particular, many viewers became enamored with the relationship between Krasinski’s character and office receptionist Pam Beesly, who is played by Jenna Fischer.

However, the popularity of Jim and Pam’s will-they-won’t-they storyline took even their actors aback, it seems. In 2013 Krasinski revealed during an interview on Today, “I don’t think [Fischer] and I ever knew what was coming, as far as people not only watching the show, but actually being involved with the characters… It was just so amazing to be part of a family with our fans.”

And before The Office’s end in 2013, Krasinski reflected on how his whole life had changed since being cast on the show. He even explained that he had been considering quitting acting altogether before he won the role that would make his name.

That admission put Krasinski into “a little bit of an existential crisis,” he told Us Weekly. “Truly, when I say [The Office] has given me everything, it’s given me everything,” he added. And that statement had as much to do with his personal life as it did his professional success.

That’s because Krasinski had moved from New York to Los Angeles to film The Office. And while in California, he had eventually met his future wife. “I wouldn’t have met [Blunt]. I wouldn’t have been out in LA,” the actor added while considering what may have happened if he hadn’t played Jim Halpert.

Blunt, of course, has had a lengthy acting career of her own. Her breakout role came in the 2006 movie The Devil Wears Prada, where she was widely praised for her performance. In his review of the film, the Houston Chronicle’s Clifford Pugh even lauded Blunt as “[stealing] nearly every scene she is in.”

From there, Blunt has had acclaimed roles in flicks such as The Young Victoria, Into the Woods and The Girl on the Train. However, in spite of her busy schedule, she admitted on Late Night with Seth Meyers in 2018 that she had managed to watch The Office.

And that was how Blunt knew who Krasinski was when she first saw him. The star later recalled that at the time, she had been at a restaurant with a companion who was already acquainted with Krasinski. Ultimately, then, the Office star had come over to their table. “He did not eat. He just stood there and made me laugh,” Blunt explained after the fact.

Then, when Meyers asked Blunt whether she knew Krasinski was the one when they first met, she responded, “I kind of did.” And when Krasinski had appeared on The Ellen Show in 2011, he had pretty much said the same. “It was one of those things where I wasn’t really looking for a relationship, and I was thinking I’m going to take my time in LA,” he had revealed.

Krasinski added of his future wife, “Then I met her, and I was so nervous. I was like, ‘Oh God, I think I’m going to fall in love with her.’” He continued, “As I shook [Blunt’s] hand, I went, ‘I like you.’” And he knew, too, who Blunt was before they had met each other.

The fame issue had come up after the pair had started dating in November 2008; however, ignoring it had helped their relationship thrive, according to Krasinski. He explained to Playboy in 2018, “I remember being at my house and saying to her, ‘So, I just want to have this really honest conversation.’”

Krasinski went on to reveal that he had said to Blunt, “‘I think you’re one of the best act…’ I didn’t even get out ‘actress.’ She went, ‘No, no, no, no!’ very loud. We didn’t have that conversation again for a really long time, and it saved our relationship.”

Instead, Krasinski continued, the pair had had a romance seemingly removed from their fame. He related, “We just looked at it as though we were two people who had fallen in love, rather than two Hollywood celebrities who’d met each other.”

Then in August 2009 Krasinski was ready to pop the question to Blunt, and they both reacted sweetly to his proposal. “She did cry after I cried, and we cried, and then everyone around us was crying… But it was great,” Krasinski told Access Hollywood that same year.

And Krasinski and Blunt said “I do” on July 10, 2010, with picturesque Como, Italy, as their backdrop. Then, four years later, they welcomed their first child, daughter Hazel; the couple’s second baby girl, Violet, would follow in 2016.

Since then, Krasinski and Blunt have also collaborated creatively. Krasinski co-wrote and directed 2018’s A Quiet Place, a critically acclaimed horror flick lauded for its originality, in which both he and Blunt also starred.

To that end, 2018 appeared to have been a good year for Blunt and Krasinski. And that wasn’t just because A Quiet Place ultimately raked in $325 million around the world. You see, Blunt also also won a Screen Actors Guild Award for her performance in the film.

What’s more, 2018 also saw the release of Mary Poppins Returns, which features Blunt as the film’s title character. The movie serves as a sequel to 1964 classic Mary Poppins, and it catches up with the same family 25 years after their first visit from the magical nanny.

However, in 2018 Blunt admitted to Entertainment Tonight that she had had a “sense of trepidation” in playing a character as beloved as Mary Poppins. “It was sort of a dual feeling of, like, well, ‘I desperately want to do it, but how do I carve out a new space for myself? How do I create my version of her?’” she said.

But Blunt also explained to the Press Association that her fears had pushed her into taking the role. “I quite like being scared by something, [and] that is usually why I want to do it,” she revealed. “I will say I was probably more scared than I have ever been to play this part. But, hey, I like the challenge!”

And Blunt went on to describe the curious way in which the film’s director, Rob Marshall, had approached her about the role. “It was like he was about to propose to me! Then when he said it’s Mary Poppins, I was like, ‘Oh my God,’” she said.

But perhaps the best reaction to Blunt’s turn as Mary Poppins came from her own husband. In 2018 Krasinski recalled on The Ellen DeGeneres Show how he and his wife had attended a private showing of Mary Poppins Returns. At the event, however, he found something unexpected.

Krasinski said, “The first time I ever saw [Mary Poppins Returns], they gave you a tissue box in the screening room. I was like, ‘Oh that’s very nice. I don’t have a cold.’” But the actor soon learned why he had received such an item.

According to Krasinski, he made a move 25 minutes into the screening – one that had shocked his wife, in fact. “I stood up and walked to the back of the room,” he later told Entertainment Weekly. “[Blunt] said, ‘Oh my God, you’ve never done that before. Do you want me to stop the movie?’”

Blunt assumed that Krasinski had gotten up because he didn’t like the film; that was far from the truth, however. Instead, her husband had made his way to the concessions table at the back of the room in desperate search of one thing in particular.

Krasinski told The Ellen Show, “I was pushing through all the bagels and muffins that were in the back looking for napkins. I was like, ‘I need anything to stop this crying!’” Indeed, his initial box of tissues hadn’t sufficed.

“I was crying so much,” Krasinski went on. “I blew through the tissue box in 20 minutes, [so] I had to go to the napkins. And then when I ran out of the napkins, it was all sweater. Just a lot of [wiping my eyes and saying], ‘Oh, it’s so beautiful!’”

Krasinski continued, “It’s honestly one of the most beautiful films. I think it’s exactly what everybody needs for the holidays. It’s pure joy!” He humorously added to Entertainment Weekly that Mary Poppins Returns was “sponsored by Kleenex” because he needed so many tissues to get through it.

Unsurprisingly, Blunt greatly appreciated her husband Krasinski’s display during her movie. On the same day that Krasinski appeared on The Ellen Show, Blunt told Entertainment Tonight’s Nancy O’Dell that her husband was generally emotional “but in a sort of cool way.”

Blunt continued, “I love that, when guys cry. I think it’s a beautiful thing [when they’re] not so tough, yeah!” But the actress didn’t take credit for setting off Krasinski’s tears; instead, she believes that they were caused by a particularly touching scene involving her co-star Ben Whishaw.

“Whishaw’s first song is so gorgeous when he’s talking about the loss of his wife,” Blunt continued to Entertainment Weekly. “I think [Krasinski] sort of cried from then onwards, you know. He’s still crying now. He kept saying, ‘What’s happening to me?’ when he was watching it.”

But Blunt may have downplayed her own talents as well as her ability to make her husband cry, as critics have since lauded her work in Mary Poppins Returns. “Blunt, so often the best thing in everything she touches, is a wonder in this role,” NPR’s Linda Holmes gushed.

And Variety critic Owen Gleiberman agreed. “Gliding down from the clouds, she’s practically perfect in every way… Blunt inhabits Mary Poppins’ snappishly entrancing spirit, and in the musical numbers she generates her own spit-spot radiance,” he wrote.

Mary Poppins Returns found favor with audiences, too, meaning it earned over $32 million in the first five days after its release. And the success of the film continues: by January 4, 2019, it had raked in more than $213 million worldwide.

And Blunt herself has earned some impressive accolades for her leading role. To date, she has earned nominations from the Screen Actors’ Guild, the Critics’ Choice Awards and the Golden Globes – proving along the way that she ably stepped in where Julie Andrews left off.
